It's Already Summer? Get Your Goals Back On Track.

I am going to get right on this one. I did not even getting around to posting my goals for 2010. Shameful. I've whittled my list down to three things. In previous years, I think I had like, five or six things. Anyway, I plan to publish this year's goal list in the next day or so. Seriously.

But here's a motivating post. Hope it gets you going.

My Isolated Cairo Life

Someone asked me to write about living in Cairo. I thought about it briefly and thought that my life's not so interesting, even with living in another country.

Here's a short list about what's different for me living in Cairo as opposed to living in the U.S. (where I was born and raised).

--I don't have a car and I commute to work on a (private) bus.
--I don't have a washing machine, so I send my laundry out.
--I can get nearly anything delivered to my house (and I take advantage of that).
--Most people speak a language other than English; that can make some tasks a bit daunting.
--It's difficult to mail a package (and as difficult to get one; and one that's fully in tact).

The view from my apartment building in Cairo.

That about covers it. I guess people would be more impressed to learn about the many things that ARE available in Cairo. You can get most things that you want and need; or some variation of it.

Some days I think ... Cairo gets a bad rap. It's often called the city of contrasts; and that's a fitting title. But most days for me, I can sit in my comfortable apartment in what's been called a 'ritzy' neighborhood (Zamalek), take the private bus to my nice teaching job at a prestigious university and life is just fine; I could be in any city. And that's my life.

MUSIC MONDAY 56 :: Bruno Mars f/Cee-lo "The Other Side"

Here's the song that I can't stop playing: Bruno Mars f/Cee-lo and B.o.B. "The Other Side". This is a crazy cool song. I like the uptempo beat. I like the lyrics ("yeah, I'm a monster, but no Frankenstein"). It's a kind of a rock out song.

Check it out.

Fake Liquor

Be careful where you get your liquor in Cairo. When you get up close it says Johnnie Wadie instead of Johnnie Walker and it says Gardan's instead of Gordon's. A knock off purse is one thing, but knock off liquor - I don't think so.

Working in the Media

Every year at the end of the semester I give a talk the students in all of my classes. The focus is on what it really takes to work in the media industry.
  • I warn them of the low salaries.
  • I tell them that they are bound to work w/difficult people.
  • I tell them that if they work hard, they will be rewarded.
This year I transferred my usual PowerPoint presentation to Prezi. Using Prezi is a good and bad thing. For example, when I was done, I asked if there were any questions and most of them want to know what I used to make the presentation?

Here's my presentation from this year at The American University in Cairo.

Fruitful

There's lots of fruit stands in Cairo. If it's fresh, you're in heaven.

My Media Consumption

This is just a short blog post to say what a slacker I've been. I've consumed a good deal of media that I have not reviewed, mostly books and movies, but some music too. Reviews are coming soon.

BOOKS (and I need to add comments to Amazon)

MOVIES

MUSIC
"Return of the Wu & Friends" by Wu-Tang Clan (that's an extensive wiki)

A Prius in Egypt

Spotted this Prius in Alexandria, Egypt (where the air quality is much better than in Cairo).

MUSIC MONDAY 54 : : Black Eyed Peas "Boom Boom Pow"

I just watched the Black Eyed Peas music video for "Boom Boom Pow" for the first time. The vid is nearly a year old. And though I listen to this song at least 3-4 times a week, I never thought to seek out the video.

After checking out the video on YouTube, I also noticed that I must be the only person who has NOT seen it. Seems it's had more than 54 million views. That can't be right. That's ridiculous. Someone tell me I'm wrong on reading the numbers: 54,926,927.

But let me also say: "That is one cool video". After seeing it, I want another video on the making of the "Boom Boom Pow" video.

I also found it interesting how they edited the song visually. But that they even did an edit on the video has me wondering ... if you can edit the song's profanity in the video, then why use profanity in the first place?

Check out the Black Eyed Peas video for "Boom Boom Pow".

Google Search Tricks

I recently discovered Prezi. It's a free tool for creating presentations. I'm proficient with PowerPoint, but Prezi has a different feel to it. More fun and exciting. Prezi definitely has a wow! factor.

I used my first Prezi presentation last week on the topic of "Working with the Media".

I'm more impressed with this Prezi on "Google Search Tricks" by Tony Vincent. Nice presentation and incredibly useful information.

NOTE: give the presentation just a few minutes to load.
