Best of '09: Resolution I Didn't Fulfill

Happy New Year's Eve!

In the next few days, I'll begin to reflect and recalculate. I'll look back on '09 and see what was good and what could have been done differently. I'll look ahead to '10 and I'll chart my future.

Just taking a quick look back, I noticed that I did not get to two of my goals: go snowboarding and run 2 5k's. Of the two, I'm most disappointed in not doing the 5k's. They seem easy enough, right? In most cities, there's at least two 5k's per weekend. I could make some excuses, but it only impacts me that I did not get to do any races this year.

I like to workout. Spinning. Aerobics, Pilates. Rollerblading. Those are my things, but I like to vary it up and that's where the running comes in. I like the training that leads up to race day. Yeah, I need to do at least one of those. That one might carry over from '09 to the '10 list. Looks like I may need a new pair of running shoes ...

Best of '09: Laugh

I don't know that these were my biggest and best belly laughs of 2009, but I remember laughing and laughing out loud watching The Hangover and 30 Rock.

Earlier this year, the movie The Hangover had been out for a bit and folks had been talking about how funny it was. But sometimes, what makes some people laugh just isn't the same for me. I figured The Hangover was a stupid boy movie. I eventually went to see the movie on a Monday or a Tuesday. I remember what day it was because it was one of my days off from work. I also remember that the theater was not very crowded.

That movie was hilarious!! On more than one occasion, it was 'make-you-laugh-til-you-cry' laughter. There are certain scenes, like the one in the hotel bathroom with tiger, that are priceless. Also, when the Asian guy jumps out of the trunk. I thought that I would lose my bladder on that one. I even wrote a movie review of The Hangover.

I am crazy about 30 Rock. I love Alec Baldwin's character. And Tina Fey and Tracy Morgan's character's are absolutely ridiculous. Love that. The entire ensemble cast do a great job for each show and I laugh uncontrollably for about 20 minutes. It's so nice to get that weekly dose of laughter from 30 Rock. I had to finally break down and get the iTunes season pass since I can't watch in real time in Cairo. I just can't live w/out my 30 Rock.

Best of '09: Car Ride - Trip to Siwa

In 2009, I managed to get in a good amount of travel. That's thanks to my new job in Cairo, Egypt. There's a lot to see in and around Cairo.

My last trip was most memorable and not only did I almost did not go, but the trip almost did not happen.

At any rate, it was a trip to Siwa, Egypt, the Desert Oasis and it took place Thanksgiving weekend. Actually, we left on Saturday afternoon and returned to Cairo on Monday night. But the doosie is that the trip would take at least nine hours by car each way. When I got a call that the trip was delayed because the scheduled bus had broken down, I almost said, no, I am NOT going on that trip. I thought about it for about 20 minutes, and decided to go ahead and take the trip in a mini-bus. I had nothing else to do for the weekend.

Now, I'm not saying that it was the best car ride, but it was the most memorable. There were two mini-buses. After riding in both of them, I can say that neither was really more comfortable than the other. They were both old and small and comfort was not an option. We crammed about ten folks in each bus and hit the road for Siwa.

One of the vans on the trip to Siwa. On this one, when the driver hit the brakes, those crazy looking mice sang "This Land Is Your Land." After nine plus hours, you can imagine how I feel about that song.

Now, you know that everything that could go wrong, did go wrong? Well, not quite. The mini-buses did not break down. But what was most memorable was trying to 'make-myself-small', yet be comfortable. I remember rest stops that were out in the middle of nowhere. I remember reading "Them" by Nathan McCall. I remember not eating anything healthy just 'biscuits' better known to me and my world as 'cookies'. I remember buying my brother's Christmas gift on that trip-a black checked scarf. I got tossed off the sandboard and torn the MCL in my knee (the first serious injury of my life). I could go on and on.

What stands out the most though is the people I met on the bus. Folks from so many different backgrounds and nationalities: French, German, South African, British, Australian, Egyptian, Kenyan, Nigerian, Canadian, other Americans and more. Mostly good folks. Some were considerate, some could have had better manners. Some liked hip hop and introduced me to some international hip hop groups. I tried to take it all in ... a group of 20 strangers on a nine hour bus ride to the desert ... yeah, that was a memorable bus ride.

Music Monday 44 :: Sade "Soldier of Love"

Well, if it's been 5 years, it's been 10. Sade seems to manage to lay low for years between her album releases and this new project is no different. Here's a breakdown of Sade's album releases (from Wikipedia):
Point is, on February 8, 2010 Sade is blessing us w/another project. Love that. I heard the single and title track and it is bangin! I am not the biggest Sade fan. I have never seen her perform live. But I do like her music. Not too mellow and w/just enough of a beat to keep my attention. I'll be waiting for this one to drop.
