Six Sites I Log Into Daily

AIf you're like me, you are on the Internet quite a bit. When I was using Firefox as my Internet browser, I liked that I could save my session so that the next time I opened Firefox, the same pages would display from the previous session.

Unfortunately, that feature does not exist (yet) in Google Chrome. However, Chrome does allow you to enter in the urls that you want to use when you first open Chrome. It's not a substitute for the save session feature, but it's a work around that I can accept.

So I currently have six websites that I begin with daily.

1. Twitter: It's become my lifeline. I have five twitter accounts that I manage and that's a bit much to keep up with. I often use Social Oomph to schedule tweets and I use TweetDeck too. Tweetdeck has recently upped their game and I like some of the new features. All that to say, that I'm still married to the Twitter web interface and I like to see the Top Tweets too.

2. Facebook: Well, yeah, you know that FB would be on the list. Living abroad, FB is my connection to my friends w/out having to talk to them. I'd love to talk to them, but the seven hour time difference is a bit of a problem sometimes. So FB is a good bridge between the time zones.

3. AUC Mail: I need to remain in touch w/what is going on at work. Though currently I have my vacation message on: "Final grades have been submitted and I am away from the office until August, 2010" or something like that.

4. Gmail: My Gmail has mostly become my primary email account. I still use Hotmail and Yahoo, but I like the Gmail interface and options like adding labels.

5. Delicious: I like Delicious because I can see what my network is bookmarking and what stories I may have missed. Sometimes I'll check to see what's popular and recent, but mostly I'm just adding my own bookmarks and checking my networks bookmarks.

6. Yahoo!: My yahoo account has become my account for subscriptions. So it tends to fill up and not really with emails that I make the time to read. I usually scan for important emails. Oh, and I take a glance at the top stories on the Yahoo! home page too.

Recording Podcasts Easily w/Audioboo

I don't quite know how I stumbled across Audioboo, but I did. Oh, I first recall that iPhone users had been tweeting about it. But I thought that it was just for iPhones. But it is not.

Folks who don't have an iPhone or the Audioboo iPhone app, can use the Web interface to take advantage of Audioboo. Count me in.

The platform is super simple. You can record audio w/their recorder (if you have a working microphone on your laptop or computer). Or you can upload your audio file to Audioboo.

They have a social networking component where you can follow people's 'boos' and they can follow yours. You can also easily share your 'boos' on other social networking platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and more. Let me know if you're using Audioboo, so that I can add you to my list of followers.

On top of all of that, you can grab an embed code and post the audio on your blog or Web site.

I've decided to use Audioboo to document my teaching this semester. On the brief podcast above, the audio quality is not the best. I used the mic on my laptop. I think I will begin to use my Zoom H2 recorder and upload the files.

My only problem w/Audioboo is the name. Enough said.

PodCampOhio 09: Finding Music for Your Podcast

Just trying to get the information that I shared w/the PodCampers out to everyone who were not able to attend PodCamp Ohio.

Here's another topic and is great for newbies and vets. To freshen up your podcast add some music at the beginning and end. You know, an intro and outro.

My presentation portion went quick. The discussion ventured into Audacity. That evolved because on Jamendo and on some other sites you can download the music. Some folks wanted to know what to do next especially if you don't want the entire song, but maybe just the intro or the hook of the track.

I also like the idea of using a local/neighborhood band. And I have some loops that I can use to make tracks, if you are so inclined.

I mentioned that I am near married to Adobe Audition. But my session attendees convinced me to dig deeper into the abilities of Audacity (which was a session that I attended after my sessions).

So Long 2008 :: Happy New Year

A few weeks ago, I posted a list of the Best of 2008 which included links to various websites and blogs. The topics ranged from music, movies and books.

So I received a request from Lori Johnson over at Lori's Old School Mix asking me to list my personal best of 2008. Wow, what a challenge. I ingest such a wide range of media that I can barely recall what I consumed this past Monday. But I am certainly up for a challenge, right?

Needless to say, my list is short, but here goes:

Best book that I read:

• "Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini (surprisingly I did not review this one ... and I did not see the movie ... duh). The book was vividly written w/lots of mystery and excitement on nearly every page.
  

Best movie that I saw:

• "Waitress" (thanks to a recommendation from my sister; Andrienne Shelly is genius ... oh, and I did not write a review on this one either ... another duh). This one is funny, romantic and Andy Griffith is quite endearing. Love this movie.
  

Best Television Comedy - and remember that I don't have cable:

• "30 Rock" Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan, the ensemble cast and the guests are hilarious on so many levels.
  

Best artists and cds - you are not surprised that it is all hip hop ... :

• Utterli ... I like being able to post pics, video, text and audio all from my cell phone. This should come in handy when I attend the Inauguration in a few weeks.

My Social Media Usage

I've been using social media for a bit. I jumped onto Facebook some time ago when I could hardly track down my students. But when I'd contact them through Facebook, they would immediately respond. Now Facebook is crammed. It's interesting to see the folks who are now jumping on board - the late comers. Some want to know what all the hype is about. I basically tell them that they can keep up w/me w/o ever actually talking to me (or others). Like eavesdropping.

I've been on MySpace for a while too. Though it is not my fav. Just too flashy and I do mean crazy graphics and blinkies. But I still go there to check out artists and to listen to music and see tour schedules.

I have not been Twittering for long. I checked it out for longer than normal to try and get the gist of it. I like the definition of micro blogging. I sort of use it as a daily diary; more like what I'm doing or going to be doing. Sometimes I use it to drive traffic to one of my blogs. I just try to keep it basic. I do like the way that Chris Brogan uses it. He shares a wealth of information it is so SM (social media).

The other SM platform that I've been on, but was slow to get fully emersed is LinkedIn. My friend Tonja mentioned it to me as a way to network. To especially get in touch w/say, HR folks who might otherwise be unreachable. I know that would not work as well today now that the platform is popular and seeking to expand.

PCPGH 3 Post Mortem - Day 1

Wow, I did not have any expectations for Podcamp Pittsburgh (PCPGH3) and that is not a bad thing. I was indeed excited at the prospect so maybe there was some level of expectation. The sessions looked interesting and that was enough for me.

So here is what I got out of it:

• met lots and lots of great folks
• gained new knowledge about social media and podcasting
• identified many resources

That's in addition to two days of free breakfast and lunch (and even FREE parking one day).

Here are some of the sessions that I attended on Saturday-Day 1 and some info that I glaumed from them.

SATURDAY
Podcasting 101
I probably should not have been in this session. I have a good amount of knowledge on the topic, but I thought I'd get some new info since technology changes rapidly

Podsafe Music
I came in late to this session, but I was able to pick up a few things like:

• GearSlutz: apparently a place to learn to tweek your audio
• Podsafe Music Network

Using Analytics
I use Google Analytics as well as Stat Counter. It was nice to know that one of the first things that the session leader mentioned was that all the stats will differ for each service. Some key points that he mentioned:

• What do you want people to do?
• What if they don't do it?
• Constantly re-evaluate what you are doing
• What leads to an exit?

Which Web 2.0 Tools to Use for What
I did like this session, but the session leader was highlighting info from the PCPGH webbie on Socal Media, so I thought I'd check that out later and went to another session.


Podcast Hosting and your Blog
These types of sessions are always interesting because the session leader will typically focus on what they use the most. For example, if they have a PC and use Word Press for blogging, which was the case here, but it could be they have a Mac and use Moveable Type for blogging. However, there was a lot of info to garner from this session. Since I came it late, it was nice that many of the resources discussed were written on the white board.

• Blip.tv: like YouTube but not including better quality video; good for audio too
  
• Talkshoe.com: for call in shows
• Blogtalk.com: also for call in shows
• Gcast.com
• Tubemogul.com: for video, but I think audio too
• filezilla: for file hosting (an extension of Mozilla)
• pod press: for podcasting via Word Press
  
• fantastical.com: for transferring a blog from one place to another; or other complex web issues

My note taking could be much better. I have other tidbits scribbled on my notepad including a note to check out: moo.com. I had my sis check it out before I had a chance and she seemed to think it was pretty cool.

Okay, that's it for one day. At least from the sessions. I gathered even more info from talking to folks and getting their biz cards and just chatting it up.
